The Gambian U20 National team moved a step closer to the next round of the 2017 African Cup of Nations youth qualifiers after they defeated Sierra Leone 2-0 in the first leg tie on Saturday at the Wusum stadium in Makeni.
The away side opened the scoring in the 61st minute from an own goal from Sierra Leone’s Ibrahim Mansaray before the Gambian skipper doubles their lead.
The visitors saw more of the ball throughout the 90 minutes. They were more comfortable away from home.
The Darling Scorpions proved too strong and were untroubled by the host.
The winner between Shooting Stars and Darling Scorpions will face North African powerhouse Morocco in the second round of the qualifiers.
The reverse fixture will be played in Banjul April 23 and the match referee is from Mauritania.
Zambia will host the 2017 African Youth Championship between February 26 to March 12.
