FIFA president visits Gabon as Sierra Leone face Cup of Nations host


FIFA’s new president Gianni Infantino (Pictured) will travel to Gabon on Friday 25 March 2016 to attend the official inauguration of the African Nations Cup 2017 mascot, following visits to Ethiopia, Djibouti.

The newly appointed world governing body boss will also have the opportunity to watch group I match between Gabon and Sierra Leone on Friday in Franceville South-East Gabon, after the official release of the mascot.

The Panthers games in Group I will only be class as friendlies and points won’t count.

Only the group winner will join Gabon in the tournament next year and the Leone Stars are third behind Sudan and Ivory Coast with a single point.

The 31 Edition will return to familiar territory after Gabon was chosen as host, Gabon co-hosted three years ago.

Four venues must be available for the Central African nation to meet minimum criteria.

The capital Libreville and the eastern city of Franceville had previously hosted games in Gabon’s shared 2012 tournament.

The Central African country has been working to get ready Port-Gentil and the northern town of Oyem to be ready for the January’s tournament slated from 14 January to February 5, 2017.

Meanwhile, President Infantino was also in attendance during the opening ceremony of the new South Sudan FA headquarters on Wednesday.

The same day the FIFA President attended the CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between South Sudan and Benin, which the visitors won 2-1.
