Government reshuffle: Paul Kamara removed as sport minister

In a wide-ranging government reshuffle, Sierra Leone President Dr Ernest Bai Koroma (Pictured) has announced that Sports Minister Paul Kamara will be replaced by Ahmed Khanou.

This is the biggest reshuffle by Sierra Leone President who has appointed nine newcomers subject to the approval of Parliament.

Mr Kamara had been expected to be moved on from the Ministry after several controversies on several occasions in recent years.

He assumed office in 2010 – the controversial minister first served as the Secretary of State, Lands, Housing and Environment under military government Julius Maada Bio’s National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC).

The 59-year-old is no stranger to controversy – In 2011, his ministry came into conflict with Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) over the appointment of Swedish coach Lars-Olof Mattsson.

The football body (SLFA) had pushed for Christian Cole to coach the team instead, culminating in the two coaches naming different squads for 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Isha Johansen was elected president of the Sierra Leone Football Association unopposed on 3 August 2013 and Kamara was again allegedly accused of damaging Rodney Michael and former international footballer Mohamed Kallon as both were disqualified by the Sierra Leone Football Executive committee.

Most recently Kamara was again in dispute with CEO of national Ebola response center NERC Paolo Conteh after disqualifying Paolo from contesting national athletics association elections before he was removed as sports minister.
