Brazil and France legends, Real Madrid teammates, Goodwill Ambassadors for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane will hold a charity match to benefit the fight against Ebola.
Two-thirds of the money raised will go to helping those affected by the Ebola epidemic in West Africa.
The other third will be donated to the Saint-Etienne’s Association, which promotes and develops social programs in the French city.
The event has been led by UNDP Goodwill Ambassadors Ronaldo and Zidane since 2003.
“To be able to help other people, communities and countries out, putting them back to how they were before Ebola caused all the damage that it has,” Ronaldo was quoted as saying by Marca.
Both icons will team up with other football stars for a match against an ASSE All Stars team to help boost Ebola recovery efforts at the 12th Match against Poverty in France’s Saint-Etienne’s Geoffroy-Guichard stadium on Apr. 20, 2015.
“While all efforts to stop Ebola are continuing, thorough recovery from its many consequences for the societies and economies of the epicentre countries must be planned now,” said UNDP administrator Helen Clark.
The recent Ebola outbreak has killed almost 9,000 people and infected as many as 22,334, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
