Sierra Leone Sports body rebuffs FIFA Ultimatum

The Sierra Leone National Sports Council (NSC) looks set for a showdown with the football world governing body, FIFA after refusing to rescind their decision to dissolve the Football FA.

In a vehement response, the Director of Sports Ibrahim Bangura has insisted that the NSC will not give up and they have a responsibility to govern sports in Sierra Leone.

“The Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Council has a responsibility to govern sports in Sierra Leone and will stand by our decision to dissolve the SLFA,” he told

Bangura stressed that “FIFA must follow procedures and respect national laws. Our decision is final and cannot be changed or overturned by anyone outside our jurisdiction.”

Football Sierra Leone reported on Thursday this week that Fifa will perceive this as government interference, but the sports body said the dissolution was in accordance with FIFA mandate after a seven-man committee was set up to identify the forty-seven voting delegates for a congress which is now overdue.

FIFA in a letter to the SLFA secretary general Chris Kamara they stated that “The decisions of the National Sports Council appear to amount to government interference in the internal affairs of the SLFA,”

Fifa secretary general Markus Kattner noted if the NSC failed to overturn their decision the matter will be referred to the FIFA’s Emergency committee.
