Sierra Leone top stars accused of avoiding call-up

The Sierra Leone Football Association has disclosed that some of the country’s top players will miss the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan in Khartoum after failing to respond to their invitation.Several key players were excluded including MLS top scorer Kei Kamara and Sweden-based striker Mohamed Bangura for next week’s Group I 2017 African Nations Cup opener in Khartoum, Sudan on June 14, 2015.As a result, the squad for the Sudan outing is now reduced to just four foreign-based players and according to the head of SLFA’s media Abubakar Kamara most of the players reluctantly avoided picking their calls.

“The technical team asked us (SLFA) to invite 13 foreign based players. We sent an invitation to their respective clubs and copied them. Most of them did not reply. We had to call them on the phone and 80 percent of them gave excuses.

“Yes, Suma (Sheriff Suma Syrianska of Sweden) and Strasser (Rodney Strasser Genoa Italy) were not invited, but Kei (Kei Kamara Columbus Crew SC) and Pobosky (Mohamed ‘Pobosky’ Bangura AIK Solna striker) were on the list. We even spoke to Kei on the phone and Pobosky was too busy to pick his phone for the past three days.”

Contrary to the media’s officer accusation, AIK’s striker told he was not contacted or received any communication from the FA.

“No one contacted me, he said. “They have not invited me for a long time. If they contacted me, I’m more than ready to represent my beloved country.”

Suma said, “I was surprised at the FA for my exclusion from the squad, Abubakar told me it was Sorie Ibrahim responsible that and he promises to ask Sorie Ibrahim the next day.”
