Sierra Leone have been disqualified from Men’s U23 African qualifying campaign by the Confederation of African Football CAF, due to pending Fifa suspension.

It could be recalled that Sierra Leone was billed to face the winner between Cameroon and Chad in the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations second round qualifiers.

Cameroon eliminated their North-central Africans counterparts 4-1 on aggregate in the first phase of the qualifiers.

Reconfirming the news, the FA’s Director of Competition, Sorie Ibrahim Sesay told this medium that they received a letter on Wednesday with regards to the disqualification.

“We were billed to play Cameroon later this month but, because of the FIFA suspension we were disqualified by CAF.”

As a reminder, FIFA suspended Sierra Leone amid allegations of government interference back in October 2018.

CAF’s decision means Cameroon are through and, will be in the final round to determine the seven nations to join hosts Egypt at the quadrennial competition slated for June 3 to 11, 2019.

This will be the third edition of the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations. Zambia was named as the initially scheduled host, but they withdrew from hosting in July 2017.

CAF announced Egypt as the new host nation of the tournament on 23 September 2017.

The final top three countries automatically qualify to represent the continent at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games football tournament.
