- Guinea’s AFCON 2019 last 16 hopes still alive
Guinea defeated Burundi 2-0 in their final AFCON Group B match at the Alexandria Stadium in Cairo on Sunday to keep their last 16 hopes alive but will have to wait until other group matches completed.
With Madagascar’s 2-0 victory over already qualified Nigeria, the Guineans are sitting third in their group, four points adrift from leaders Madagascar and Nigeria respectively.
Mohamed Yattara scored a brace for the West Africans as Guinea defeated 10-man Burundi to give themselves a strong chance of a place in the knockout stages.
Debutants Burundi will be heading home after three defeats and no goals scored in what has been a difficult introduction to continental finals for the East African nation.
Influential Liverpool’s midfielder Naby Keita was missing from action as he did not recover in time from a knock he picked up in the 1-0 loss to Nigeria in the team’s previous fixture.
