Sierra Leone will kick start the maiden edition of women’s Wafu Zone A tournament involving eight teams in the Southern Province on Tuesday, 25 February at the Bo City stadium.

Eight nations were drawn into Group A and B for the phase a few weeks ago at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Sierra Leone.

The tournament is expected to run from 25 February to 7 March with host Sierra Leone, Liberia, Senegal and five others set to compete for the maiden accolade.

Head coach Abdulai Bah has said his side have been working hard for this tournament following a 2-2 draw with their Liberia counterparts during the 2019 festive season in Makeni.

“For the past two to three months, we have been working hard, especially with the new young players in the squad. Most of them played against Senegal recently. Six of them are included in my team,” Coach Bah explained.

“I’m optimistic we’re going to get a positive start. From the six new players, hopefully, two of them will play from the start.”

Bah added, “We want to use this competition as a stepping stone for women’s football in the country.”

When asked about the opposition, he said: “We have watched them trained they have a few good players that can handle the ball well.”

The Cape Verdeans arrived safely earlier on Monday, February 23) in Freetown with a 25-men delegation in search for their first international victory against the host.

Meanwhile, Border neighbours Liberia completed their first training session in Sierra Leone highly motivated after their arrival.

The Liberians arrived with a 33-man delegation after departing Monrovia on Sunday for the Northern Province town of Makeni where they will go toe to toe with Guinea Bissau on Wednesday in their Group B opener.
