The World Cup qualification match between Guinea and Morocco has been postponed, following unrest at the capital of Conakry Guinea on Sunday.

The Moroccan delegation was escorted home last night after CAF and FIFA joint statement. Military officers claimed on national television that they had dissolved the government and closed all land and air borders.

Morocco arrived on Friday completed their first training on Saturday. They were expected to train at the match venue Stade Général Lansana Conté de Nongo on Sunday ahead of Monday’s game, but will not go ahead as planned.

Guinea opened their Group I Qatar 2022 campaign against neighbours Guinea Bissau with a 1-1 draw in Nouakchott, paving the way for Morocco to top the group after defeating Sudan 2-0 in Rabat.

Morocco coach Vahid Halilhodzic told French newspaper L’Equipe that they could hear “gunshots nearby all day”.

“The current political and security situation in Guinea is quite volatile and is being closely monitored by FIFA and CAF,” a FIFA statement read.

“To ensure the safety and security of all players and to protect all match officials, FIFA and CAF have decided to postpone the match.

“Rescheduling information will be made available at a later date.”
