Former Comoros head coach Amir Abdou has been appointed as the new Mauritania head coach, the Mauritanian Football Federation have confirmed.

The 49-year-old signed a two-year deal after his impressive stint with Comoros, where he worked for over seven years.

Amir Abdou, who led Comoros to the last 16 at this year’s Nations Cup, but missed their game against host nation Cameroon, will continue his coaching adventure with the Lions of Chinguetti.

“Amir Abdo has reached an agreement with the Mauritania Football Federation (FFRIM) on a two-year contract and his backroom staff will be announced later,” Mauritanian Football Federation said in a statement.

Mauritania suffered three defeats during their 2021 Africa Group F matches against the Gambia 1-0, Tunisia 4-0 and 2-0 to Mali, respectively.

Abdou’s main task will be to lead Mauritania to a third successive Nations Cup finals in Ivory Coast next year when the qualifying campaign begins later this year.
