Sierra Leone’s Sierra Stars have been denied a place in next year’s U17 African Cup of Nations after suffering a penalty shoot-out heartbreak to Senegal in Mauritania.

It ended 0-0 after 90 minutes and went to penalties after both sides showed resilience and composure.

Sierra Stars lost the spot-kicks 6-5 against the young Lions of Teranga following a goalless draw in a closely-fought game in the West African Football Union semi-final on Friday.

The result means Senegal will join Mali in the final tournament in the Algeria 2023 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations.

In the other semi-final, Mali overcomes host Mauritania 2-0 at the Stade de Cheikha Boidya on Friday.
