• Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies 2 Bayelsa Queens 1
  • Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns won their opening game at a CAF WCL for the second tournament in a row, they also started the 2021 tournament with a 1-0 win over Kenyan team Vihiga Queens.

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies are now undefeated in six games at the CAF WCL, this was their fourth win in open play. They have also won one game in their 2021 Semi-final encounter against Malabo Kings on penalties and drew the other at the group stages in 2021 against AS FAR.

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies had kept five successive clean sheets and had gone 530 minutes at the CAF WCL without letting in a goal, before conceding in this match.

Mamelodi Sundowns have now won all three of their games at the CAF WCL against teams from the WAFU region, along with this win they also defeated Nigerian team Rivers Angels in the 2021 Group Stages and Hasaacas Ladies of Ghana in the final and respectively.

This was the fourth meeting between clubs from Southern Africa and West Africa at the CAF WCL Finals, the Southern African teams lead the head-to-head 4-0.

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have managed to score two goals in a game at the CAF WCL Finals for only the second time in six games, the other occasion was when winning the final 2-0 against Hasaacas Ladies in 2021.

Sundowns goal scorer Lelona Daweti is the fifth different player to score a goal for Sundowns at the CAF WCL, at the 2021 tournament they had four different players score their goals.

Lelona Daweti is the first Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies player to score more than one goal in a game at a CAF WCL Finals for Sundowns Ladies.

Mary Anjor is the first player to score a goal for Bayelsa Queens at the CAF WCL Finals, she is also the first player to score a goal at the CAF WCL Finals against Mamelodi Sundowns.

All three of Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies’ group stage wins at the CAF WCL Finals have been by a single-goal margin, this was the first time they scored two goals in a group game at the tournament.

With this loss for Bayelsa Queens it means that no Nigerian club has managed to win their opening game at a CAF WCL, their counterparts Rivers Angels lost their opening game in 2021 3-0 to AS FAR.
