Sierra Leone’s winger Kallon nets in Shanghai Port’s win

Sierra Leone’s winger Issa Kallon was on target as Shanghái Port recorded their fifth straight victory in the Chinese Super League Changchun Sports Center in the 10th round of the Super League.

Kallon, 27, scored his first of the season and Shanghái Port‘s opener in the 11th minute in their 3-0 victory over Changchun Yata on Monday.

Midfielder Paulinho Soares Dos Santos and former Chelsea attacker Oscar Dos Emboaba Júnior completed the victory with all goals scored in the first half.

The win means they continue their lead on the Chinese Super League table with 26 points from their opening ten games.

Kallon, who was making his eighth appearance of the season, was substituted in the 73rd minute, making way for Argentine’s Matías Vargas.

Ports’ winner came from another impressive performance in their recent match against Henan FC at home, which saw goals from Wang Shenchao, Oscar, and Wu Lei eke out a 3:2 victory to bag all three points. With this win, they extended their unbeaten run at home to four matches.

They’ll host will host Chengdu Rongcheng in week eleven of the CSL on June 3rd.

Serie C promotion delights for Sierra Leone-born Ceesay

Serie C promotion delights for Sierra Leone-born Ceesay

Winston Razel Ceesay was pleased with his side’s playoff promotion to Serie C after they overcame Cavese 3-1 in Vibo Valentia on Sunday.

Brindisi FC returned to the Italian third division Serie C after 33 years, reappearing among the professionals after 12 seasons.

Sierra Leone-born Winston Ceesay, 22, has been pivotal since joining the club in December 2022. He featured in 22 league games for Brindisi this campaign.

“I want to say thanks to the club for giving me such an opportunity to play for a great side. We all made history together,” delighted Ceesay told FSL News.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be a champion. Winning this was a great achievement. I am proud of the team and myself. We’re all looking forward to starting the new challenge together as a team.”

“It’s a great day for Brindisi Football Club, back after 33 years among the professionals. Congratulations to everyone, to Mr Ciro Danucci and to the boys, who have brought the blue-and-whites back into the football that counts. Score us one more goal, Brindisi”. This is how Michele Emiliano, president of the Puglia Region, celebrates Brindisi’s promotion to Serie C after the play-off in Vibo Valentia with Cavese.

Ceesay started his pro career with Italian Serie D club Troina in the 2018–19 season before he moved to Licata the following season, where he found regular playing time. In January 2020, Serie C club Siena signed Ceesay on a permanent deal.

However, the league got halted within the next few weeks due to the COVID-19 2pandemic in Italy, and he left the club without making any appearances for them.

On 12 November 2020, Lucchese announced the signing of Ceesay on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Winston made his Serie C and professional debut on 15 November 2020 in a 1–1 draw against Pro Sesto. He was released by the club on 1 February 2021 after making seven league appearances.

On 29 March 2021, Serie D Club Rotonda announced the signing of Ceesay. On 18 July 2022, he moved to Trapani.

He, however, couldn’t find enough playing time at Trapani and joined fellow Serie D club Brindisi in December 2022.

In March 2022, Ceesay received his first call-up to Sierra Leone national team for friendly matches against TogoLiberia and Congo. He made his international debut on 29 March 2022 in a 2–1 win against Congo.

Skipper Steven Caulker could miss Nigeria qualifier

Skipper Steven Caulker could miss Nigeria qualifier

Sierra Leone skipper Steven Caulker, 31, is set to be sidelined for four to six weeks after successful surgery on his knee on Thursday.

The experienced defender sustained the injury in Wigan Athletic’s final goalless draw of the English Championship season against Rotherham United this week

Sierra Leone is set to host Nigeria on June 18 at the Samuel Kayon Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia, Liberia, and the Leone Stars skipper is doubtful to be fully fit on time.

The Africa Cup of Nations matchday five qualifier is a must-win game for John Keister’s team if they are to revive hopes of reaching Ivory Coast 2023.

It’s a 50-50 that the former Tottenham and Liverpool defender could captain Leone Stars against Nigeria. Sierra Leone revamped their hopes of reaching 2023 AFCIN in Ivory Coast with a comfortable 2-0 victory over their Central African opponent Sao Tome and Principe, on March 26 in Morocco.

As a result, they stand third in Group A behind Super Eagles on nine points and Guinea Bissau on seven first and second, respectively.

The Super Eagles, who are aiming for a third consecutive Africa Cup of Nations appearance, suffered a defeat to Guinea-Bissua at home but regained the top spot by defeating Bissau in March.
