Ajax thrash Kallon’s Cambuur, Daramy and Haller on score sheet

Three players with Sierra Leonean backgrounds were on the pitch as Ajax thrashed newcomers Cambuur 9-0 at their Johan Cruijff Arena on Saturday. AFC Ajax

A home debut goal for Mohamed Daramy, who recently joined Ajax from Copenhagen. The 19-year-old showed himself to his audience as he scored goal number six two minutes after he was subbed on.

“It feels so good. And I’m so happy for myself and for the team. We just kept going. After the first two goals, we took control of the game. We just kept scoring,” Daramy said after his first goal at the Johan Cruijff Arena.

“It was a fantastic moment, and that is what you want to see from a player that gives energy,” Ten Hag said about that goal afterwards.

The two other players hailing from Sierra Leonean parents are Alex Bangura in the photo and Issa Kallon.

They are both potential new faces expected to join the Sierra Leone National team were in action on a difficult night as Cambuur suffered one of their worst defeats.

Bangura played the full throttle of the contest whilst Issa Kallon was substituted in the 67th-minute after Ajax were seven up.

Ivory Coast striker Sébastien Haller vies with Alex Bangura in the photo, was also on the scoresheet. The big Ivorian striker made it seven for the leaders before Danilo and Neres completed the big win.

Cambuur sitting ninth on the log, have only managed two wins in this campaign.

Inform Sierra Leone native Sorba Thomas scored a solo goal as Huddersfield Town thrashed Reading 4-0 on Saturday.

Fankaty Dabo confident ahead of QPR encounter

Defender Fankaty Dabo believes Conventry City can handle any challenge this season following their opening three wins out of four English Championship matches.

Ahead of their trip to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium on Saturday, the right-back is delighted with the Sky Blues strong start to the season. They’ll face a QPR side that lying one place and one point behind the Sky Blues in the table.

Dabo says that they are not afraid of anyone amongst their ranks after they won three of their opening four fixtures. The Sky Blues have collected nine points sitting 4th on the Championship log.

“We don’t fear anyone anyway because we are who we are and with confidence and momentum anything is possible. Anything is possible in the Championship as we’ve seen with so many seasons, so we’ve just got to keep chugging away really,” he told the clubs website.

Dabo, who agreed on a new three-year deal with the Sky Blues until summer 2023, has featured in every Championship game thus far.

Another Sierra Leonean to likely feature in this tie is right back Osman Kakay, who played for the QPR in their last outing in a 2-0 win over Oxford United in the EFL Cup on Tuesday.

Ethiopia and Sierra Leone share spoils in friendly encounter

Ethiopia and Sierra Leone shared the points in Thursday’s friendly at the Bahir Dar International Stadium.

The match was Sierra Leone first since their 1-0 win over Benin on June 15 at the Stade Général Lansana Conté de Nongo to qualify for next year’s Cup of Nations.

VFB Stuttgart youngster Mohamed Sankoh set for knee surgery

Sierra Leone native Mohamed Sankoh suffered a severe knee injury on his VfB Stuttgart debut on Saturday. As a result, the 17-year-old attacker has to undergo an operation.

Sankoh, who was introduced in the 65th to bookmarked his first senior appearance, unfortunately, damaged his knee in their 5-1 win over Greuther Fürth after colliding with the visiting keeper Sascha Burchert.

The Dutch/Sierra Leonean youngster was forced off with a knee problem shortly after his introduction.

“Mohamed Sankoh sustained a serious knee injury involving the capsule and ligament apparatus in VfB’s Bundesliga match against Greuther Fürth. The 17-year-old attacker will be operated on in the coming days and will not be available to VfB in the coming months,” they said in a statement.

VfB sports director Sven Mislintat offered words of courage. He said, “Unfortunately, the detailed investigations have confirmed the initial fears. This is a heavy blow for all of us, especially of course for Mo Sankoh. Mo did a great preparation and was on the right track overall. Now he has a difficult time ahead of him, in which we will support him in any way.”

He joined the German top tier side from Stoke City on a five-year deal in August 2020.

Fankaty Dabo features in Coventry City opening win over Forest

Sierra Leone native Fankaty Dabo played the full throttle of the game as Coventry City defeated Nottingham Forest 2-1 in their Championship opener on Sunday at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The Sky Blues captain Kyle McFadzean scrambled in a late winner as they sensationally came from behind to overcome their visitors.

Forest took the lead through Lyle Taylor’s first-half strike fired, but the host rallied twice second half to ensure they start their campaign with a win.

Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres 81st-minute equaliser spark the beginning of their comeback before Kyle McFadzean finally gave them the much need lead to send fans into ecstasy.

Dabo has been an established right-back earning plaudit for his impressive performances. 

He was named in the PFA League One Team of the Year and won the Sky Blues 2019/20 Player of the Season as they secured the League One title to return to the Championship.

Next Saturday, they will be away to Barnsley at the Oakwell Stadium.
