Kamil Conteh departs Middlesbrough for Grimsby Town

Sierra Leone International Kamil Conteh has completed a three-year deal with League Two side Grimsby Town Football Club from Middlesbrough.

“The Mariners are delighted to confirm the signing of Sierra Leone midfielder Kamil Conteh on a three-year deal after agreeing an undisclosed fee with Middlesbrough.”

The former Watford graduate heads to the League Two club on the back of a successful loan spell with fifth-tier National League side Gateshead in the second half of last season.

Conteh, 20, joined the Sky Bet Championship club last summer from fellow second-tier side Watford and spent most of last season with fifth-tier side Gateshead in the National League.

An impressive campaign saw him voted their Fans’ Player of the Year and helped the Tyneside club reach the FA Trophy Final.

Manager Paul Hurst is pleased with Conteh’s addition. He said, “I am pleased to have signed Kamil. He was on our wishlist for some time, certainly over the summer and at the end of last season when we watched him a few times.

“He really impressed us then,so he’s been an ongoing target for us. Kamil a good midfield player. He can play off either foot and receives the ball well. He gets around the pitch extremely well and he is a young player that we feel has got so much potential.”

Kei Kamara named in MLS All-Star roster to face Arsenal

Ex-Sierra Leone striker Kei Kamara is among twenty-six players who will represent Major League Soccer (MLS) against Arsenal for the 2023 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target, held July 19 at D.C. United’s Audi Field.

The roster was selected through the following voting mechanisms:

    • 12 players determined by a combined vote of fan, media and players
    • 12 players selected by MLS All-Star head coach Wayne Rooney of the host team, D.C. United

Ex-Sierra Leone striker Kei Kamara recorded his 144th MLS regular-season goal as Chicago Fire defeated Portland Timbers 2-1 on Wednesday night.

The Chicago Fire kicked off the second half of the season with a much-needed win, snapping a six-game winless streak.

Frank Klopas’ side pulled off a 2-1 win away to the Portland Timbers thanks to a late second-half goal from Kei Kamara.

The MLS veteran’s goal in the 83rd minute was his fifth of the season as he moved within one of second-place Landon Donovan on the all-time list. Chris Wondolowski (171) is the leader.

Fabian Herbers gave Fire the lead in the eighth minute before Franck Boli tallied for Portland, but it was the Sierra Leonean who wrapped a big win for the Fire.

As a result, the three points moved Chicago Fire to 20 points on the season and climbed from 14th to 11th place in the Eastern Conference.

‘Bittersweet’ moment for Crotone attacker Augustus Kargbo

‘Bittersweet’ moment for Crotone attacker Augustus Kargbo

Attacker August Kargbo has said it was a ‘bitter pill to swallow’ two days after Sierra Leone’s 3-2 defeat to Nigeria in the Cup of Nations qualifier in the Liberia capital on Sunday.

The Crotone player restored parity on Sunday from 20 yards with a famous strike in the 85th minute as the Leone Stars drew level, but his goal was not enough.

His goal on Sunday was his second in the Cup of Nations qualifiers. But, it was Leicester attacker Kelechi Iheanacho who seized the moment, securing Nigeria’s qualification with a crucial last-gasp goal. This result also guaranteed a place for Guinea-Bissau.

The three-time African Champions prevailed with a 3-2 scoreline to secure their ticket to play at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, Cote d’Ivoire 2023.

“It’s still hurt really bad. It’s a dream for every footballer to play for his country in the #AFCON. Since I was a child, that has always been my dream. To see that dream slip away on Sunday – was a bitter pill to swallow,” Kargbo took to Twitter to express his dissatisfaction.

The final group matches are to be played in September as Sierra Leone tackles Guinea-Bissua and Nigeria hosts Sao Tome.
